Dr. Cougar Hall

Dr. Cougar Hall is a professor and researcher of public health at Brigham Young University. He earned his bachelor’s degree in School Health Education at Brigham Young University before getting a master’s degree in Health Promotion and Education and his PhD in Teaching and Learning at the University of Utah. Cougar's desire to learn and share public health information is one of the main reasons why he is the perfect host for the Y Health podcast.

Alisha Redelfs

Alisha (Hayden) Redelfs is a Brigham Young University alumni, earning her Master of Public Health from BYU in 2010. She completed her Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) in Health Promotion and Behavioral Sciences from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston - School of Public Health in 2013. Dr. Redelfs' previous work as Deputy Director for Research and Evaluation for the Paso del Norte Institute for Healthy Living at the University of Texas at El Paso centered on utilization-focused evaluation, program planning, and communicating complexity in a simplified manner within a community context. As a translational scientist intent on making best practices in health accessible and available to all communities, Dr. Redelfs is developing partnerships and provides support to community organizations that will to lead to greater behavior change and improved health in Utah County and the surrounding region.

Emma Drybread

Emma Drybread is a recently graduated MPH alumnus from Folsom, CA. She is passionate about giving every child the opportunity to receive a quality education. She has traveled to Mexico over 20 times, volunteering in orphanages, teaching English, and serving as a full-time missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Emma has been working on projects for United Way of Utah County's Summer Learning program at South Franklin Community Center for about 10 months. She worked as Program Coordinator for Summer Learning for her fieldwork experience this past summer. Emma plans to take what she has learned in the MPH program to create opportunities to help children in rural communities in Baja California, MX further progress in their education.

Jim Johnston

Dr. Jim Johnston is a professor in the Department of Public Health at Brigham Young University, where he teaches courses in Environmental and Occupational Health. His research focuses on indoor environmental quality issues including bioaerosol exposures and household air pollution. Prior to coming to BYU, Dr. Johnston worked as the Environmental Monitoring Manager for the National Children’s Study in Cache County, UT. He has over 20 years’ experience as an industrial hygienist, including positions at the Idaho National Laboratory, Utah Labor Commission, and the University of Utah. He is a board certified Industrial Hygienist. Dr. Johnston was raised in Ogden, Utah. He received his bachelor’s degree in microbiology from Weber State University, and his Master’s and Doctorate degrees in Industrial Hygiene and Health Promotion & Education at the University of Utah.

Julianne Grose

Julianne Grose is dedicated to teaching through experiential learning and enjoys learning with students. Prior to being the Associate Vice President at the Office of Belonging, she was a Professor of Microbiology and Molecular Biology. Julianne has taught for 15 years at Brigham Young University where she has helped with the creation of several new courses including The Lifesciences and the Restored Gospel of Jesus a Christ, the BYU Phage Hunters program, and two international study abroad programs. In addition, she mentors the Be the Match on campus Cougars vs Cancer club and runs a student-centered independent research lab that focuses on metabolism and the microbiome where she mentors both graduate and undergraduate students in scientific thinking. Dr. Grose obtained a Ph.D. in Biology as well as B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Utah. She joined the Office of Belonging in 2023 as an Associate Vice President for Belonging.

Leiema Hunt

 Leiema’s Public Health career began at 13 when she shadowed a research group studying American Samoan women’s attitudes toward cancer screening. She started her formal education at the local community college in American Samoa, then earned a bachelor’s in Health and Exercise Science at BYU-Hawaii. In 2014, she became the youngest program coordinator at the American Samoa Department of Health. After five years, she pursued an MPH at BYU-Provo. Before graduating in 2020, the CDC recruited her as the first field representative based in American Samoa. She worked in the CDC’s Office of Island Affairs for four years, then with the Pacific Island Health Officers Association. Now, she is an adjunct professor and working to expand the nonprofit Obesity Awakening Movement.

Marco Verdeja

Marco Verdeja currently works as an Equity and Inclusion Consultant for Community Health at Intermountain Healthcare, where he oversees strategy development and implementation for system-wide Community Health equity initiatives. His work focuses on areas such as immunizations, insurance and health access, avoidable disease and injury, and healthcare anchor strategies. In addition, he supports locally based community health efforts in Utah and Millard Counties.


Before joining Intermountain Healthcare, he spent three years working as a general practitioner and in emergency medicine in Mexico, where he developed a strong commitment to population-based health approaches. He later moved to the U.S. to pursue a master’s degree in public health at Brigham Young University, graduating in 2019.

Randy Page

Dr. Randy Page served as a professor in the Department of Public Health at Brigham Young University from 2003 to 2024, concluding a distinguished 40-year academic career. Specializing in public health research, epidemiology, and biostatistics, he later expanded his focus to global health and international development. In 2013, he became the director of BYU’s Global Health Internship Program, which grew to include placements in 20 countries and impacted nearly 900 students. He also served as the coordinator for the International Development minor from 2017, advising Students for International Development and the Peace Corps Certification program. Throughout his career, Dr. Page was dedicated to mentoring students, fostering cross-cultural learning, and expanding opportunities for global engagement.

Ricardo Noriega

 Ricardo hails from Quito, Ecuador, where he earned his Medical Degree from Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador. Following graduation, he served as a rural doctor for Ecuador's Ministry of Public Health, providing care to underserved communities.

In 2018, Ricardo began the rigorous process of transitioning into the U.S. healthcare system. He successfully passed the medical licensing exams and earned ECFMG certification in 2021, an achievement that validates the credentials of international medical graduates. To gain hands-on experience, he completed externships and observerships in clinical settings across Florida, New York, New Mexico, and Utah.

In his ongoing commitment to advancing his education, Ricardo is currently pursuing a Master's degree to deepen his expertise and broaden his impact in the medical field.

Zach Aanderud

 I am a professor of microbial ecology and biogeochemistry born and raised in Portland OR and educated at BYU, the University of California Davis, and Michigan State University. I feel that the purpose of my professional life is to teach students about the interconnectedness of life within the lithosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere and promote environmental sustainability through ecological truths, gospel principles, and charity.
